Die Straße von Gibraltar zwischen Südspanien und Marokko verbindet das Mittelmeer mit dem Atlantischen Ozean. Und obwohl viele Schiffe hier verkehren, können Sie eine ungewöhnlich hohe Anzahl an Delfinen und Walen bestaunen.

Besonders an dieser Stelle bestehen beste Konditionen für Delfine und Wale.

Seit 2007 gibt es eine Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung für den Schiffsverkehr, damit die Wale und Delfine bessere Überlebenschancen haben.

Von der Hafenstadt Tarifa haben wir mit  der Organisation firmm eine kleine Bootsreise unternommen, um Delfine und Wale in ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum zu beobachten. Firmm hat sich als Ziel gesetzt, die Leute für die Tiere zu sensibilisieren und organisieren dafür Bootsausflüge und Wochen-Workshops.

Überraschend war für mich, dass firmm garantiert hatte, dass wir auf jeden Fall einige Wale und Delfine während einer 2-stündigen Bootsfahrt beobachten könnten. Spannend war, dass die Forscherin selbst mit auf unserem Boot war. Sie hat uns mit ihrer Leidenschaft für Wale und Delfine angesteckt.

Recognizing  a whale or dolphin from a boat is not as easy as it might seem. Searching the water surface needs a trained eye. Dolphin schools are the most easily spotted.

Whales, on the other hand, can be recognized by their blow. This is the air they breathe out at the surface.

The blow looks like a huge fountain.

The common dolphin is present all year round in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The population has been decreasing rapidly. This is due to over-fishing and pollution.

As a result, the common dolphins are added to the Red List of Endangered Species.
